A great-looking site is nice... but if your
website content stinks, you're sunk.
In fact, there are a lot of ways you can go
wrong regarding your website content. Most of these errors come
from trying to save time, money, or both - but end up costing
you more of both in the end.
Here are a few website content
mistakes to watch out for:
1. No text. Seriously,
there are sites out there with NO text! They say a picture is
worth a thousand words - and while that's true in a lot of
cases, your website is not one of them. Unfortunately, some
website owners believe it when they hear they should slap up a
flash presentation or a really great graphic - and that it'll
be enough to engage their visitors.
2. Not enough text. A close
relative to the text-naked sites mentioned above. I've had
clients ask for "just a dozen words or so" on their website
pages. "If you can't say it in just a few words, you can't
say it," is their mindset. And while this approach works for
billboards and direct mail postcards, it earns you no Google
love! 200-400 words is fine for a blog post, but your website
pages generally need to be in the 400-700 word range.
3. Text written from the inside
out. "Must have a PhD in finance." Read that
recently in a prospective client's request for a proposal. Hmmm
- well, that'll work just fine... if all of your prospective
clients also have a PhD in finance!
It's a common pitfall - writing about your
business as if everyone out there knows (or cares) what you
know. You should be very proud of your awards, designations,
certifications, and how long you've been in business. But to be
honest, your customers don't care.
They want to know how you're going to make
their lives easier.
It's a good argument for hiring a freelance
writer who knows nothing about your field, in fact. If we can
"get" the benefit of doing business with you, we can
communicate that to your prospective clients - on their level,
addressing what they really care about.
4. Text
written by any of these
people.
